The Lao government has gone to great effort and expense to ensure that the 16th Asean University Games proves to be a success in both sporting and societal terms, bringing together the athletes and supporters of the Asean countries in the spirit of solidarity.

As the crowning jewels of the games, considerable money and effort has gone into the opening and closing ceremonies especially, with the games organisers spending more than 7.2 billion kip (around US$900,000) to make sure the two spectaculars will be remembered by all those who attend.

The university games IT Sub- Committee admitted on Tuesday that they have experienced challenges related to keeping the official website for the games immediately up-to-date, in terms of the events schedule and match results.

Head of the IT Sub-Committee Mr Khamphan Sitthavong said they have encountered numerous problems due to communication difficulties with the various team management bodies and the sporting federations concerned.

Asean nations have expressed their appreciation and offered their congratulations to Laos on being a firstclass host throughout the 16th Asean University Games, a senior official has said.

“Every day, we’ve received compliments from the heads of visiting athlete delegations. They told us they enjoyed staying here and eating the food we provided, and they also enjoyed the general atmosphere of the games.

Gold medal match at the Asean University Games showed yesterday that the young National University of Laos team were lacking in both luck and experience, after they went down 0-2 to Thailand.

The Lao students were full of hope for a victory in front of over 20,000 supporters at the National Stadium, but it was not to be. Memories of the 2010 games were quickly revived, when the same two teams played for the same result.

Wushu competition winds up with Laos topping the medal tally PDF Print E-mail

Lao martial artists won another four gold medals in the wushu yesterday, to bring the host nation's total for six from the wushu competition.

The victorious Lao fighters yesterday triumphed in different categories of the Sanshou events. Sanshou combines full-contact kickboxing, including close range and rapid successive punches and kicks, with wrestling, takedowns, throws and sweeps.

The winning fighters for Laos on Wednesday were Chanthasone Sengthaphone in the men’s 48 kg category, Kavy Phommakhanthong in the men’s 52 kg category, Khamla Soukaphone in the men’s 56 kg class, and Sommay Xayavong in the men’s 70 kg class.
